How we help
Relationship & Marital Counselling Gold Coast
Most couples do not arrive because of one dramatic event. They arrive because the same argument keeps recurring, because conversation has narrowed to logistics, or because something happened that neither person has been able to talk about properly since. Distance usually builds slowly, and by the time it is named, both people are often tired and braced for the next disagreement.
Our Clinical Psychologists at MindTree Psychology in Mermaid Beach work with couples across the Gold Coast on conflict, communication, trust, intimacy and separation. Sessions are balanced and even-handed - we are not there to decide who is right, but to help you both understand the pattern you are caught in and change it. Signs and symptoms
Couples often seek support when they notice patterns like these:
- The same argument on repeat, with no resolution
- Conversations escalating quickly, or shutting down entirely
- Criticism, defensiveness, contempt or stonewalling
- Feeling unheard, dismissed or walking on eggshells
- Loss of closeness, affection or sexual intimacy
- Breach of trust, including infidelity, secrecy or financial dishonesty
- Disagreement about parenting, money, family or the division of load
- Living more like housemates than partners
- Difficulty reconnecting after illness, a new baby, relocation or career change
- Considering separation, or navigating it as constructively as possible
How therapy helps
Research on couples consistently shows that it is not the presence of conflict that predicts difficulty, but how conflict is handled and whether repair happens afterwards. Most distressed couples are stuck in a self-sustaining cycle where each person's protective response triggers the other's - pursue and withdraw being the most common.
Therapy makes that cycle visible so it stops being something you do to each other and becomes something you can tackle together. Where separation is the outcome, we support you to do it respectfully, particularly where children are involved.
Gottman-informed couples therapy
Built on decades of observational research. We assess the relationship's strengths and risk patterns, then work on managing conflict, replacing criticism and defensiveness with clear requests, repairing after ruptures, and rebuilding friendship and shared meaning.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
An attachment-based approach that identifies the negative cycle and the softer feelings underneath the anger or withdrawal, creating the conversations that restore emotional safety and closeness.
Communication and repair skills
Concrete, practical skills - raising issues gently, listening without preparing a rebuttal, taking breaks before flooding, and returning to repair - practised in session rather than only described.
Rebuilding trust and separation support
Structured work after a breach of trust, and where a relationship is ending, support for separating respectfully and co-parenting well.

Frequently asked questions
What if my partner will not attend?
Individual work on relationship difficulties can still be valuable. Changing your own part in a pattern often shifts the dynamic, and some partners become more willing once they see the process is even-handed.
Will the psychologist take sides?
No. Our role is to understand both perspectives and make the shared pattern visible. Both partners should leave feeling they were heard, even when the conversation is difficult.
Can couples counselling help if we are separating?
Yes. Therapy is not only about staying together. Where a relationship is ending, sessions can help you separate with less conflict and set up workable co-parenting arrangements.
