How we help
OCD Treatment Gold Coast
Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves two linked experiences: obsessions - unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges that cause significant distress - and compulsions, the repetitive actions or mental rituals people use to neutralise that distress. OCD is often misunderstood as a preference for tidiness. In reality it can be exhausting, frightening and time-consuming, and many people carry it privately for years before seeking help.
Our Clinical Psychologists at MindTree Psychology in Mermaid Beach provide specialist OCD treatment for adults and adolescents across the Gold Coast, including contamination fears, checking, symmetry and 'just right' urges, intrusive harm or taboo thoughts, and purely mental rituals sometimes called Pure O.
Signs and symptoms
OCD takes many forms, and the specific content matters less than the pattern of obsession followed by compulsion. Common signs include:
- Intrusive thoughts, images or urges that feel repugnant, dangerous or completely out of character
- Excessive washing, cleaning or fear of contamination
- Repeated checking of locks, appliances, messages or your own memory
- A need for symmetry, order or things feeling 'just right' before you can move on
- Mental rituals such as counting, praying, reviewing events or silently repeating phrases
- Frequent reassurance-seeking from family, partners, health professionals or the internet
- Avoiding people, places or activities that trigger the thoughts
- Rituals consuming an hour or more each day, or interfering with work, study or relationships
- Significant shame or secrecy about the content of the thoughts
How therapy helps
OCD is maintained by the compulsion, not the thought. Every ritual delivers brief relief and teaches the brain that the obsession was a genuine threat that needed neutralising - so the doubt returns stronger. Effective treatment breaks that reinforcement loop.
The internationally recognised gold-standard treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specific form of CBT. Our psychologists deliver ERP in a structured, collaborative way, supported by other approaches where useful.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
The gold-standard treatment for OCD. Together we build a hierarchy of triggers, then gradually and deliberately face them while resisting the compulsion. Over repeated practice, the anxiety falls on its own and the brain learns that the ritual was never what kept you safe.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Addresses the beliefs that give obsessions their power - inflated responsibility, intolerance of uncertainty, and the idea that thinking something makes it more likely or means something about your character.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Builds willingness to have uncomfortable thoughts present without acting on them, which strengthens and sustains ERP gains over the long term.
Family and partner involvement
OCD often draws loved ones into providing reassurance or accommodating rituals. With your consent, we can help family members step back from accommodation in a supportive, non-punitive way.
What to expect at MindTree
- A careful assessment of your specific obsessions, compulsions and triggers - including the mental rituals that are easy to miss.
- Clear education about how OCD works, so the treatment rationale makes sense before any exposure work begins.
- A collaboratively built exposure hierarchy - you always know what is coming, and you set the pace.
- Practical between-session practice, because ERP works through repetition in real life, not only in the consulting room.
- A non-judgemental space for content you may never have said out loud. Intrusive thoughts are a symptom, not a reflection of who you are.
Frequently asked questions
Do my intrusive thoughts mean I am a dangerous or bad person?
No. Intrusive thoughts are extremely common in the general population, and in OCD they tend to fixate on what a person cares about most. The distress you feel about them is the clearest evidence that they conflict with your values.
Is ERP going to be too distressing?
ERP is deliberately challenging, but it is never a matter of being thrown in the deep end. You and your psychologist plan each step together, starting at a manageable level and building gradually as your confidence grows.
Can OCD be treated with therapy alone?
Many people do very well with ERP-based therapy on its own. For more severe presentations, a combination of therapy and medication prescribed by your GP or psychiatrist may be recommended, and we are glad to work alongside your medical team.
